It’s hard to believe that nearly six years have passed since I last experienced the mesmerizing sounds of Minami Deutsch. That unforgettable night, they opened for Kikagaku Moyo at the fantastic—but now regrettably closed—venue, Arts Riot in Burlington, Vermont. Their name translates to “South Germany,” which inevitably invites comparisons to krautrock. However, this band is so much more than mere homage to Neu!; they have fully immersed themselves in the rich tradition of German avant-psychedelia and continually bring new life to over 60 years of innovation.
When discussing this vibrant musical movement, one can’t overlook the motorik beat, a defining element that drives both the music and the audience. I challenge you to listen to their recording without bobbing your head—it’s nearly impossible! For a prime example, check the moment around 3:30 in “I’ve Seen a U.F.O,” when the band intentionally drops into a powerful groove following an intense build-up. The thrill of collective release among the audience is truly something to behold. As a fun twist, listen for the crowd’s reactions as they collectively lose themselves in that monumental jam!
During this tour, the band was also experimenting with new material, two of which are featured in this recording. I found the first of these tracks (track 4) particularly captivating, as it showcases their soaring dual-guitar harmonies reminiscent of Agitation Free. We certainly need more bands taking inspiration from Agitation Free’s unique sound!
Feedback from everyone I know who attended this tour has been overwhelmingly positive, with many declaring that this was among the best performances of the year. Excitingly, the band has some upcoming European tour dates on the horizon, giving our friends across the pond a chance to experience them live soon.
This recording was captured from the back of the venue using Schoeps MK22 microphones, along with a quality board mix provided by Tubby’s FOH engineer, Wil. The sound quality is exceptional!
