The Western fascination with Japanese musical traditions, from kissa bars to city pop, has become a familiar narrative. However, the Portland ambient duo Visible Cloaks has distinguished themselves by making authentic contributions to the genre of kankyō ongaku, or “environmental music.” Spencer Doran and Ryan Carlile, the duo behind Visible Cloaks, have shown their dedication to this genre particularly through their recent works. Last year, Doran curated the Grammy-nominated compilation Kankyō Ongaku: Japanese Ambient, Environmental & New Age Music 1980-1990, which opened doors to the rich soundscapes of this music style. Their latest album, Paradessence, further explores the principles of kankyō ongaku, focusing on creating music that resonates with our current world rather than imagined future utopias.
Paradessence, their first release in nine years, navigates a global landscape marked by genocide, climate crises, and post-pandemic turmoil. The album offers a nuanced perspective, intertwining unsettling builds with beautiful, expansive moments designed to be experienced in one continuous listening session.

Ed O’Brien: Blue Morpho [Transgressive]
While Radiohead has resumed touring, guitarist Ed O’Brien is continuing to develop his solo career, channeling his experiences into music. His new album, Blue Morpho, is a powerful reflection of his personal journey. Written during one of the most challenging phases of his life, which was characterized by profound depression in late 2020, the music captures his struggles and triumphs. O’Brien described that this period of hardship was illuminated by the hours he spent playing guitar, leading him toward a hopeful breakthrough.
Produced by Paul Epworth and featuring collaborations with talented artists like Shabaka Hutchings and composer Tõnu Kõrvits, Blue Morpho not only stands on its own musically but is also complemented by a short film titled Blue Morpho: The Three Act Play, further enhancing the album’s narrative depth.
