Shannon Lay‘s fresh one” Mirrors” got a lot of play around my home this Spring. It’s expertly recorded, and the sound resembles the sunlight that enters through the branches and lights up my house as I cook. But seeing her perform at Tubby’s on a stacked triple act with Anna St. Luis and Shana Fullana was a very nice and proper wonder.

It was necessary to separate Shannon’s music into their own distinct pieces because they are so beautifully crafted. Do you take the piano playing’s mind-blowing finger-style or the deeply reflective lyrics? Or perhaps you should concentrate on her incredible speech power?

I’ll get to the piano using because I spent the majority of my time figuring out how to play it. Her technical ability seemed simple, but the deeply emotional resonance of her playing never came into play. Her using came from a position of true vulnerability, drawing viewers in with the natural intensity of her expression.

The collection, which included the preceding “mirrors” and excellent covers by Elliott Smith and Karen Dalton, was taken from her whole catalog. Every track felt like a spotlight, but a certain instant felt most equitable. After making a brief acknowledgement of Kingston’s parking problems ( a local hot topic ), she settled into” Come Up” off of 2017’s” Living Water” and, somehow, what started as a discussion of parking tickets turned into a moment where we could collectively reflect on all of the external pressures and ills. We could choose to walk past those stress and focus on enthusiasm:

” We all have much

Travel on rattle your broken arms

Bring on your toes that have been broken.

Travel up”

I’d like to offer a unique shout-out to the Tubby’s masses on this special evening. Typically speaking, recording guitar sound singer-songwriters in a table is an exercise in futility. You can only do so much limiting, but everyone was very respectful of the music and players, and you can learn that in the recording. The quality is excellent, but kindly enjoy.
