Empty Star joins Tubby’s Fifth Anniversary in NYCTaper insurance!
Empty Star’s established in the circle of the Tubby’s anniversary celebration was important. The day had already gotten quite gloomy. Large storms had largely made travel out of New York City difficult, and many bands, and fans, had to reschedule travel arrangements. The previous night, I had been setting up the equipment at the location, and the staff was extremely high in terms of morale. When I returned that day, I had less than maximum vibes, but things started to turn round quickly. After a few drinks, the second band hit the stage, a shock fill in from Wild Pink, and things were immediately looking good. No one was talking about the surprise when Empty Star struck. It was gathering day.
Empty Star’s participation on the act made perfect sense. Fred Thomas, Empty Star’s major musician, is a long time senior of Detroit’s lively music landscape with certificates on far too many records to listing. He has performed at Tubby’s numerous times as a member of the top DIY/Punk group Tyvek from Detroit, and he is also a member of the Winged Wheel owner. The Empty Star project, which was primarily shot during Covid, was intended to “go back to basics of recording on tape four-track and have it be more about engaging sounds and experience than great performances or getting an industry-standard catch audio,”
The workshop recordings are all made by Fred. Fred and Devon Clausen, both on guitar and Frances Ma on guitar and guide singers, performed drum machine music in this performance. Before this, I was acquainted with the substance, but the pins are present. It took all of half of the established opening” Overlook” to be thankful I had hit history. Anyone could want all the soft power pop glory the trio could have wished for during the evening. Great music, also played and a great benefit of some great phase conversation. One of the songs, Fred mentioned, was about the moment when his father ran for governor of his hometown. His description of the practice,” SSUUUCCCKKKEEEDDDD”. Rarely did it bother me that your ex-friend may be featured in political strategy advertisements, which would make them even more miserable.
You can catch Fred playing with Winged Wheel at the Bearsville theater ( with Guided By Voices )! on 8/10. You can also find Tyvek, sans Fred, at Tubby’s on 7/27.
This set’s tracking differed a lot from the typical Tubby’s setup. I had to set up two different sets of mics and recorders and start and stop each between bands because there were two” stages” with two different speakers. Fortunately, I was able to find a board nourish from the main unit in the back for each” level”. For the saving you have below, I combined the front room microphones with the table supply. It sounds superb, full of life and screaming guitarists. Crank it!
